100 Dolphin

I am ending the first 100 paintings and starting the second phase of this now ongoing project with this dolphin painting. The photo was taken from my brother-in-law's 65' research vessel, Weatherbird, as the dolphins played in the boat's wake. My last encounter with dolphins was kayaking with my wife in Jarrett Bay off of Core Sound in NC. The bay averages 1 - 3 feet in depth. We both heard what we thought was the other's labored wheezing, until looking around we were in the midst of 2 dozen dolphins. A totally different experience when you a down at waterlevel and surrounded. We tried to keep up with them but they took off across the bay to the sound.

96 Hay Field

Almost heaven... This field is just south of Culpepper Va near the Commonwealth Show Grounds. I was leaving the show to look at an old church ( future paintings ) I had been told about and this was the view in the rear view mirror. This subject will definitely be developed into a larger painting.

95 Cat at Piano

The model for this painting is our cat, Fidget who we think is 14. Not that we don't know what year he was born, we just can't remember.....At 14, Fidget gets up every morning at 6:30 to eat. He gets one of us gets up at 6:30 to feed him. After his can of food he chases, runs and goes nuts throughout the house, with the 5 dogs looking on in awe. (We recently replaced the carpet with wood flooring. No traction)

Red Eyed Tree Frog. I have completed a number of these 1 Hundred Paintings Project paintings in between these two tree frogs. They are paintings of various dogs. 92 German Shorthaired Pointer

German shorthaired Pointer out in the field. This girl is not our Shorthaired Gizmo. But I will tell you about him anyway. Gizmo is another family rescue dog, who was found at the pound. We don't know his early history, but he is deathly afraid of gunshots, fireworks etc. A bit schizo and of a rather sensitive personality, we try not to get him excited. Along with the Rottweiler, he is our guard dog, keeping UPS and mailman from invading our yard.

90 Show Llama

Why do I call this painting "Show Llama"? You see the nice neat mane, flowing off to the right and left? Well, that is not natural. Our llamas would have anything and everything stuck in their manes. If they were out in the woods, it wasn't unusual to find 2-3 foot long tree branch hanging from one's mane.
At a recent horse show, I was discussing llamas with an exhibitor. They had friends whose llamas would spit and butt you with their heads. Ours were nothing like that. Willie and Magic just didn't lower themselves to interact with mere humans. We were welcome to bring them food. In fact the only time one of them tried to spit at me was when I was taking food away. My shop was in one of the areas set aside for them. If I was working outside, they would come up to watch. But only on their terms. The reason for the long neck is so that they could look down on you.

87 Piano Study

Last week we went to the opening reception for the Show your Swine art show. While enjoying the artwork, the wine and food we were fascinated by the piano player who was set up in front of windows with the late afternoon/evening sun coming through. Of course, I had no camera with me nor easel and paints (probably would be frowned upon at the event) or even a sketch book (that would have been fun), so I asked one of the directors of the Art Council if she would take some photos for me. She already had taken some and she took some more. This painting is really a study for a larger work. Should it be called a piano etude?
