148 Pasture at Dawn

This painting is the second of the "memory" paintings. I am trying to capture the colors and clouds in the morning light. The cloud shapes are constantly changing. It's worse than a seascape, as waves have a regularity to them. Though constantly moving, the waves basic shape stays the same. As the sun rises and sets, the morning and evening light changes color and intensity by the minute. The closer to the horizon, the quicker the change.

The painting was done from some notes and scribbled lines I jotted down as the sun rose. It wasn't until a few days later that I actually painted it. Have you ever found notes that you wrote to yourself, and wondered what in the heck you were trying to say? Well, after a lapse of a couple of days, those color notes and squiggly lines didn't convey all the information that they did when I wrote them.

But it is still early in this project. I will try make up some abbreviations for colors and values, and standardize the lines. One type for hard edges, another for soft edges. And a few other shorthand notes.

Here is the sketch and notes for this painting

147 At the Gate

Last month, I was commissioned to create a painting of a nearby farm. As the seasons had already changed from Autumn to Winter, I had to rely on photographs taken earlier. Among the views of the cabin and barn and ponds were a number of cow and calf photos. So of course, I had to paint the cows. Here is the first.

146 Summer Road

A dirt road through the fields, soybeans I think, old oak tree and a log tobacco barn in the afternoon summer sun. My antidote to cold grey winter days.

How to paint

Finishing up those Christmas commissions....here is another video, painting a waterlily.

It is recorded in real time, not high speed "fast painting." Though more has been edited out then left in. Mostly shots of the painting with nothing happening while I mix colors and decide what to paint next. The painting is 3" x 5" Don't turn up the volume, there is no soundtrack.

Video Recap

I will be putting another painting up later tonight. Unfortunately, quite a few of the paintings I am working on are going to be gifts and I can't post them until after Christmas.

In the meantime, here is a short video slide show of some recent paintings.

145 Painted Bunting

I was first introduced to the Bunting family by an Indigo Bunting in the vegetable garden. A iridescent blue, it made the bluebirds and jays look drab. But I never saw the Painted Bunting in North Carolina. A few years back, when we were traveling back and forth to Art Shows in Florida, we happened to be staying in Savannah when the Painted Buntings were migrating through. We left the Isle of Hope to go to Skidaway Nature Center. The Nature Center there was all set up and ready for both the people and the birds, with scopes set up inside to view the feeders behind the Nature Center Building. We got our first sight of the there. Afterward we went hiking through the woods and marshes. We saw a number of the painted buntings, but to be honest, if we hadn't seen them at the feeder, we would never have known what we were looking at in the wild. So here is my Painted Bunting in the pines and oaks of Coastal Georgia in early Spring.

144 Holly Berry

Here is a painting for Christmas and Winter. I am no longer in denial about the season. Here is a cheery painting. The red berries, green leaves and blue sky make it a colorful little gem. Not a lot of snow, just enough to make everything look good.

144 Dawn

This painting began as an exercise. Since all painting is from memory, you are either looking at the canvas or what you are painting. You can get an overall view if you step back a ways and look at the canvas in the landscape, but when it comes to looking at a specific shape or form you can only concentrate on one at a time. I was sitting in the studio yesterday morning as the sun rose. I did a rough sketch and made some color notes, such as "light blue fading to dull orange", while atrying to remember the scene. I painted it this evening, and am happy with it.

142 Bald Rooster

Since I am watching the sunrise as I add the photo of this painting, post it to the blog, email updates to my subscribers, it's only fitting that it is a painting of a rooster. Thankfully, our neighbors have chickens, so we get to enjoy the rooster crowing vicariously. Also the donkey which is about a quarter mile down the road. Of course, Oreo the mama goat's bleating most likely annoys our neighbors enough to make us part of the Great Countryside Morning Symphony.

I am not sure of the breed of this fellow, so I call him the Bald Rooster, his coloring reminds me of a Bald Eagle.

140 Highland Cattle

I have been having a lot of fun painting birds lately. So why not paint a cow again. Just for a day or so. It's getting cold again (at least for here) but not as cold as the highlands of Scotland. To get to the point, Highland Cattle, originally from Scotland have long heavy coats which keep them warm through the wild Highland winters. Pretty wild looking creatures

139 Meadowlark

A beautiful sunny day, hard to believe it's December. But they are callng for a chance of snow on Saturday. Here in NC that means schools will be closed on Friday. Today's painting is another in the bird series, a Western Meadowlark. Another beautiful summer morning.

I am adding some paintings from earlier in the project. This is one of my favorites. It is number 8 and you would have to scroll way down to find it. It is of three belted galloways at Fearrington Farm near Pittsboro, NC. This was painted on location and I had to wait patiently for the cows to get out into the sunshine.

138 Goldfinch

I am continuing with a series of bird paintings. Today's painting is the American Goldfinch. It's a sure sign of summer when their dull mustard plumage turns bright yellow and they fly across the yard in their distinctive flight , a series of arcs as they flap and rest, flap and rest. If it keeps raining here, we will need a pair of these for the ark.
