201 Young Heifer

At a recent show in northern Virginia, a lot of collectors were interested in paintings of Black Angus. Now I understand that there are a lot of Black Angus in that area, but when it comes to painting, the Herefords (white and brown), Belted Galloways (oreo cows) and Highland Cattle (hairy, shaggy with long horns) make the job much easier.
The white face of the young cow below gives an opportunity to play with colors. Warm whites from the sunlight, neutral/grays in the shadows and some blue reflected lights from the sky.

199 Belgian Blue Bull

A quick post, this painting was sold before I got it up on the blog, sorry about that. Since the file names for the photos include the number and it was on the website, I am posting this and will move on to the next.....number 200

The rope halter is the "fun to paint" item in the painting...

198 Mountain Barn

Painted outdoors, "on location," looking up "The Hill" to the barns at the Blowing Rock Horse Show on a beautiful summer day in the Blue Ridge Mountains. "The Hill" seems to get steeper every year. I seem to remember going up and down with ease when I first started painting here. Upon a little more reflection, I used a golf cart shuttle quite a bit that first year.

197 Pony Painting

Painting a white horse on a black background was a great experiment with color, you can see a post about an earlier painting on my other blog, that I decided to continue with that series. In this painting I used a photo of a white pony taken outdoors on a normal day. I then played with the contast, creating a a brighter, more direct light and darkening the shadows. Then the colors were intensified and played with. All without using photoshop, just paint and imagination.

196 Red Rooster

The Red Rooster is the first of new chicken paintings. Though small in size, it is a powerful painting, capable of getting your attention from across the room. Perhaps you can put in on a small table top easel next to your alarm clock.

Finding older paintings and posts on a blog can easily become frustrating. In addition to the page with some of the earlier paintings, new posts will have a image and link to earlier work. Today's painting is Jack, a Jack Russell Terrier

195 Black Angus

I am playing "catch up," today. This is the second painting posted today. A while back we visited a couple of my wife's portrait clients. In addition to the dogs that Theresa painted, they have a farm full of Black Angus. Bob drove us around so that I could take photographs. We started with the young bull and then off to the field where the heifers were. Then down the road to a field full of calves and their mothers, more photos. Finally back to the house to the old bull who was reaching retirement age. A few hundred photos to work with - isn't digital grand.
Here is one of the girls from the heifer's field.

Portrait of Betty Young

I thought at first that I might surprise you when you saw the painting after reading the title of this post. But since you met Lulu in the previous post, it looks like my chances of that are way down.
Betty is a member of the Young family along with Lulu. They were both rescue dogs adopted from Danny and Ron's Rescue. Their portraits will be featured on Danny and Ron's Rescue 2011 Calendar along with eleven others. So be on the lookout, the calendars will be coming out in November.

A sneak peek - Lulu Young

Today's painting is a bit different. You may notice that I didn't even number it. It is a portrait of Lulu Young. I created it for Danny and Ron's Rescue 2011 Calendar. The calendar will feature works of twelve artists ( I am making an educated guess ) including my wife M. Theresa Brown, who have created paintings of dogs that have found homes thanks to Danny and Ron.

193 Burro - Henderson

The Henderson in the title of this painting is not Henderson NV, but Henderson NC. You may notice that he is in a green background. He lives in a pasture in the midst of tall pines, not the rocks and sand of the desert. You would only have to take a 20minute drive through the back roads to get from our studio to his farm. Also on the farm are a herd of longhorn cows which has provided models for a number of paintings. They work for white bread. The farm manager told us if we couldn't see the longhorns from the fence to just yell, loud and often and have some white bread ready when the arrived. Just for future reference, one loaf of bread, no matter how big, will not feed a herd of longhorns.

Here is my impressionistic painting of an "Eastern" burro.

192 Cows, FLA

Okay, I am back at it. More paintings to come, they are all lined up and waiting their turn to get online, so... Let's look at the origin of today's painting. What I want you to do, the next time you are driving through Florida, you really need to get off the interstates. You can go across on I-10 and get on Rt. 301 and head south down the middle of the state. Now please do pay attention to the speed limit signs. You can stop at the Orange Shop in Citra for some fresh squeezed orange juice. As you near Ocala you can still see pastures full of spreading live oak trees (with spanish moss) and white/cream Charolais cows lying in the shade. .

191 Middleburg Street Scene

"They're back." I guess you could call it a hiatus or just plain being busy with more than I had planned (that's good) and not keeping up with this blog. But you should know that though I haven't been posting paintings, I have been painting them. If fact, in a few days you should see the beginning of the third one hundred paintings.

Today's painting is a summer afternoon in Middleburg, VA. The lowering sun backlit the awnings, trees and flowers and made the view down the sidewalk glow. If you want to know the actual location, I was painting diagonally across the intersection for the Red Fox Inn.

186 Afternoon Swim

This is one of the two paintings I posted on my non-1hundredpaintings blog, because I just couldn't wait to show them. It was a hot day at the horse show in Aiken SC and the two paintings of horses and water just made me feel a bit cooler. The second painting is already sold, you can see it at www.sfilarsky.blogspot.com, but I am working on a second, larger painting of that subject.

185 Seven Sisters at the Garden Gate

I got a chance the other day to take the easel out into our own garden and paint. This is the view looking out of the garden towards our front pasture. The garden face I made from cedar logs and tobacco sticks. It's about time to replace the tobacco sticks, untreated wood outside in the south lasting for almost 15 years seems pretty darn good to me.

This blog is now one year old. I will have a special offer to those of you following this blog, and for fans of my facebook page, and a real special offer for my collectors. So check back.....

184 Corgi Eyes

I painted this while working at a two week long horse show out of town. I had our camper set up and at first enjoyed the quiet life. After a couple of days without Theresa, the four dogs and the puppy ( I guess that means we are back to five) the cat, the goats and the ponies it began to get a bit too quiet. ( I was apparently the only vendor who misread the rules. I think it should have said vendors are requested to bring pets. Apparently someone stuck not into my copy. So just like at home, here is a Corgi to watch your every move...

183 Fox in Profile

When I look back at the beginning of this project, one of my goals was to be able to organize my paintings and the info associated with them a bit more efficiently than I had been doing... And I can say that I have improved that aspect. But I swear I thought that this painting had already been posted, but the history of blog posts doesn't lie. So here you go, about a week after I thought I posted it.
One thing about painting small impressionistic pieces. You can use a brushstroke or blob of paint to convey the image, but getting that blob just right at this size is harder than painting a more realistic detailed image. But it is more fun at least for me.

181 Dressage at Fork

This painting was done on location at the Fork Stables a few weeks back during the CIC*** 3 Day Event. The horse (and its rider) participate in a cross country course - uphill, downhill, over jumps and through water, a timed stadium jumping course and dressage. For this painting I was standing at the side of the road looking down into the dressage ring. With a painting like this from life, one has to decide what to paint first. Capture the horse and rider than leisurely(relatively) at the background or the other way around, get the landscape right and then set the horse and rider in it.

180 Red Macaw

This second macaw painting probably shows the similarity between the macaw and chicken eyes. Tonight I have finished day two at the horse show in Aiken SC. Spent yesterday setting up and today finessing the display and working on some paintings, two of which should end up on this blog. To be honest, after two days at the show, I can't think of what to tell you about this painting. I did use it in a demonstration in a workshop Theresa and I gave at the Raleigh NC Jerry's Artarama store. It wasn't about painting, but photographing artwork and having prints, note cards, tote bags etc made....

179 Hieland Laddie

The Kyloe or Highland Cattle
What made this painting a challenge and fun was creating the different textures. Long hair on the cow, the horns and the trees and pasture in the distance. I to take a bit more care when painting this size as each brush stroke carries more importance than it does in a larger painting.

I will be teaching a workshop, Painting Small - Big Results on Saturday August 14 at Jerry's Artarama Raleigh store, click here for more

177 Corgi Puppy

Seven weeks since they were born, I am now painting the corgi puppies. One went to a new home last Saturday. I was a bit resistant to painting the puppies at first. I was worried that the paintings could easily become "too cute." But now that they are leaving, I am painting them.

This painting and the next few are painted on a wood panel rather than on stretched canvas. The quarter inch mahogany plywood comes from a wooden boat builder. It has a great smooth surface that captures all the brush strokes. What's great about it for you is that they are much easier to frame.

176 Kingfisher

I have always been fascinated by the Kingfishers. Here in North America, the belted kingfisher can be found at almost any pond or body of water. We see them here in central North Carolina and at the coast along the salt marshes and estuaries. They will perch on poles or wires watching for fish. If flying, they will hover before diving headfirst into the water.

174 Macaw

Staying with the birds. While painting this macaw, what struck me was the similarity between the macaw and the chicken. Of course, I am only speaking here in terms of painting, not the biology or zoology. Just look at the eye of the macaw and compare it to the eye of chicken.
