176 Kingfisher

I have always been fascinated by the Kingfishers. Here in North America, the belted kingfisher can be found at almost any pond or body of water. We see them here in central North Carolina and at the coast along the salt marshes and estuaries. They will perch on poles or wires watching for fish. If flying, they will hover before diving headfirst into the water.

"See the splashing of the kingfisher flashing to the water." Pink Floyd "Granchester Meadows" from Ummagumma

Here is a painting of a female Belted Kingfisher in the late afternoon sun....

175 White Donkey

Yesterday I was at the Dixie Draft Horse, Mule and Carriage Auction in Troutman, NC. It seemed that I needed to be working on a painting of something other than birds for a couple of days. So here's another donkey painting....

174 Macaw

Staying with the birds. While painting this macaw, what struck me was the similarity between the macaw and the chicken. Of course, I am only speaking here in terms of painting, not the biology or zoology. Just look at the eye of the macaw and compare it to the eye of chicken.

172 A Glass of Wine

A Glass of Wine. I realized that today's painting is the first still life in the series. I am a bit amazed that I haven't done any until now. In addition to a long history of still life painting through the last 500 years, painting still lifes is a great way to work on your painting skills. The techniques you learn painting from a still life, color and value, making objects move back or come forward. Using soft edges vs. hard edges, etc. translate to figure and landscape paintings. Painting distant trees against a fence line in the foreground of a landscape is the same, if of a lesser degree than painting the edge of a table against a plaster wall background.
Here's a glass of wine for you. Knowing me, it's most likely just a nice chianti to go with my Italian sauage and salad.

George Carlin once noted that dogs have eyebrows we can see the emotions there. These eyebrows just said it all.

170 Rottweiler

When my wife, Theresa, was recently working with Burning Oak Studios recording a DVD on How to Paint the Family Dog, I helped her with a scene on how to and how not to photograph your dog. DaVinci our 106lb Rottweiler/lapdog was one of the stars. I stole one of Theresa's photos to use for this painting.

169 Red Red Tree Frog

No, I wasn't listening to UB40's Red Red Wine while painting this, though I just put it on to listen to while writing this post. I painted this while at a horse sale of all places. The red background that is the beginning of most of my oil paintings is plain to see here. In fact I was getting ready to start on the background leaves when I decided that I liked it fine the way it was. So, it was finished!
