Winter Birds 2 Goldfinch

Here is another visitor to our feeders during the last snow. A typical Carolina winter, we went from the 60's on Monday to snow on Friday-Saturday, 9° and 0° degree nights on Sunday and Monday and back to 70° on Friday.

Winter Birds - Chipping Sparrow

We don't get much snow here in Carolina, but when we do it's a frenzied time at the bird feeders. Here is a Chipping Sparrow getting ready to fly down and take its turn at one of our feeders.

257 Fox Fox Fox Chicken

This Rooster was painted in the middle of a number of Fox paintings, thus the name Fox Fox Fox Chicken. One of those fox paintings "Fox Eyes" is on the previous post. Could Fox Eyes and this painting be considered a matched pair?

196 Red Rooster

The Red Rooster is the first of new chicken paintings. Though small in size, it is a powerful painting, capable of getting your attention from across the room. Perhaps you can put in on a small table top easel next to your alarm clock.

Finding older paintings and posts on a blog can easily become frustrating. In addition to the page with some of the earlier paintings, new posts will have a image and link to earlier work. Today's painting is Jack, a Jack Russell Terrier

George Carlin once noted that dogs have eyebrows we can see the emotions there. These eyebrows just said it all.

180 Red Macaw

This second macaw painting probably shows the similarity between the macaw and chicken eyes. Tonight I have finished day two at the horse show in Aiken SC. Spent yesterday setting up and today finessing the display and working on some paintings, two of which should end up on this blog. To be honest, after two days at the show, I can't think of what to tell you about this painting. I did use it in a demonstration in a workshop Theresa and I gave at the Raleigh NC Jerry's Artarama store. It wasn't about painting, but photographing artwork and having prints, note cards, tote bags etc made....

176 Kingfisher

I have always been fascinated by the Kingfishers. Here in North America, the belted kingfisher can be found at almost any pond or body of water. We see them here in central North Carolina and at the coast along the salt marshes and estuaries. They will perch on poles or wires watching for fish. If flying, they will hover before diving headfirst into the water.

"See the splashing of the kingfisher flashing to the water." Pink Floyd "Granchester Meadows" from Ummagumma

Here is a painting of a female Belted Kingfisher in the late afternoon sun....

174 Macaw

Staying with the birds. While painting this macaw, what struck me was the similarity between the macaw and the chicken. Of course, I am only speaking here in terms of painting, not the biology or zoology. Just look at the eye of the macaw and compare it to the eye of chicken.

160 Snow Bird

Today we got seven inches of snow and a couple inches of sleet on top.We filled the feeders three times today. Probably put out over 5 lbs of sunflower seeds in the bird feeders. I caught this bird as it sat on a tree outside the kitchen window. Off to the studio (it's twenty five feet from the house) to work on this painting. The colors are a little more subtle, but there are oranges and blues that might not make the transition to the computer screen.

157 Titmouse

With winter being here, titmice, chickadees, juncos, cardinals and even woodpeckers are eating at the bird feeders. Fifty pound bags of sunflower seeds seem to disappear in days. Maybe not days.... The little titmouse goes to the feeder, takes one seed in its beak and flies off to a tree branch were it works on the seed, eats it and flies back. I wonder how it gets enough food. Sort of like eating steamed crabs, go through about a half a dozen and then go get a meal....

145 Painted Bunting

I was first introduced to the Bunting family by an Indigo Bunting in the vegetable garden. A iridescent blue, it made the bluebirds and jays look drab. But I never saw the Painted Bunting in North Carolina. A few years back, when we were traveling back and forth to Art Shows in Florida, we happened to be staying in Savannah when the Painted Buntings were migrating through. We left the Isle of Hope to go to Skidaway Nature Center. The Nature Center there was all set up and ready for both the people and the birds, with scopes set up inside to view the feeders behind the Nature Center Building. We got our first sight of the there. Afterward we went hiking through the woods and marshes. We saw a number of the painted buntings, but to be honest, if we hadn't seen them at the feeder, we would never have known what we were looking at in the wild. So here is my Painted Bunting in the pines and oaks of Coastal Georgia in early Spring.

139 Meadowlark

A beautiful sunny day, hard to believe it's December. But they are callng for a chance of snow on Saturday. Here in NC that means schools will be closed on Friday. Today's painting is another in the bird series, a Western Meadowlark. Another beautiful summer morning.

I am adding some paintings from earlier in the project. This is one of my favorites. It is number 8 and you would have to scroll way down to find it. It is of three belted galloways at Fearrington Farm near Pittsboro, NC. This was painted on location and I had to wait patiently for the cows to get out into the sunshine.

138 Goldfinch

I am continuing with a series of bird paintings. Today's painting is the American Goldfinch. It's a sure sign of summer when their dull mustard plumage turns bright yellow and they fly across the yard in their distinctive flight , a series of arcs as they flap and rest, flap and rest. If it keeps raining here, we will need a pair of these for the ark.

137 Blue Jay

Here is the second in the series of bird paintings. Or a series of paintings of birds that are blue. I have to admit that I am very pleased with the way this painting turned out. Sometimes when I work at a painting, paying attention to colors, "Is that too warm or too cool," the values, "Should the edge of that shadow be just a bit lighter?" the form, composition and all the other elements, that I am taken by surprise by the finished product. Often the last few touches take the painting from "I'm going to thow this out." to "Wow! Did I just do that?"
