265 Sleeping Dogs Lie 2`

I was painting outdoors on a beautiful Sunday afternoon not long ago. I was literally a couple of feet away from a sidewalk cafe, a coffee shop and bakery. Looking around for a suitable subject, I saw this pretty young lady passed out under a table. Still, you have to paint quickly and with concentration. You never know when you model will get up and move, then it's all over. Luckily, I was given plenty of time.

Brownie is one of the dogs from the Blowing Rock Horse Show that I painted this year. My client said that when he looks at her husband, the his ears drop and a look of pure adoration is in his eyes. So we ended up with a painting focusing in on the eyes with enough space to show the lowered ears.

A German Shorthaired Pointer after a hard run on a cold winter morning. That green in the background represents the pines at the edge of the field. It was pointed out to me that he has "psycho eyes" in the painting. A trick of the sunlight, but don't German Shorthaireds alway have psycho eyes?

215 A Corgi in Winter

Time for another Corgi painting. My wife, Theresa, set this photo near my easel. I took the hint. A corgi out in the snow on a beautiful sunny day. Wonderful backlight on the dog, with sun sparkling off the snow.

Painting winter and snow paintings on a toned background is really the only way for me. You paint the figures and landscape, the shadows in the snow and then come on with the white, brightening the painting as you add a brushstroke there and a brushstroke here, building up to the bright winter day.

211 Corgi Puppy 2

Throop, pronounced "troop" like the Thames River, is the latest addition here at the studio. At ten weeks old he was commanding from the top of the front porch steps, surveying the yard whose security has been placed in his capable paws. Now nearly one year later, he still takes his work seriously, coming inside for a break or nap. I photographed this painting as it progressed to give you a look at the painting process.

It was late afternoon on a cold day early in December. I was at a horse show at The Barracks near Charlottesville, VA painting the view looking out towards the Blue Ridge Mountains. For the duration of the two hours I was painting, those three dogs were all over the bed of the truck, hanging out one side, then running over to see what was happening on the other. Yet not once did they try to get out of the truck. They did check the progress of my painting, but didn't give an opinion for good or bad.

I thought at first that I might surprise you when you saw the painting after reading the title of this post. But since you met Lulu in the previous post, it looks like my chances of that are way down.

Betty is a member of the Young family along with Lulu. They were both rescue dogs adopted from Danny and Ron's Rescue. Their portraits will be featured on Danny and Ron's Rescue 2011 Calendar along with eleven others. So be on the lookout, the calendars will be coming out in November.

I painted this while working at a two week long horse show out of town. I had our camper set up and at first enjoyed the quiet life. After a couple of days without Theresa, the four dogs and the puppy ( I guess that means we are back to five) the cat, the goats and the ponies it began to get a bit too quiet. ( I was apparently the only vendor who misread the rules. I think it should have said vendors are requested to bring pets. Apparently someone stuck not into my copy. So just like at home, here is a Corgi to watch your every move...
