286 Jersey on the Lawn

We came across this young Jersey cow along with three others not far from our studio. They were busy keeping the grass cut on the front lawn of an old homestead. We got out to take photos (only had phones, not the real cameras), the owner walked up and we got to talking. He was getting ready to take them to a back field for Autumn and Winter but was running a bit late that afternoon. Ten minutes later and they would have been gone from view of the road and remained unknown to us. He told us that he had been planning to buy one of the four from a retiring farmer nearby, but he had ended up in the hospital before completing the deal. While there, his wife completed the purchase. Unsure of exactly which cow he wanted, she bought all four.
This small painting is the first of the Jersey paintings, one of which will end up as a 30" x 40" or a 36" x 48" painting.

282 Foothills Farm

We passed this farm near Marion, NC and had to turn back and stop. Hay had just been cut and was being raked into windrows. We both thought, "I hope it doesn't rain before the get it up."
I can't resist a red barn with sun shining on a tin roof, so here it is.

272 Southern Summer

Carolina Summer, hot, humid, somewhere above the haze is a blue sky and a burning sun. But find a spot in the shade, under a tree or on the porch, maybe a breeze and a glasses of tea. But that's August and it's still only June, so enjoy.

261 Sunny Afternoon

Another example of what you see on the side of the road in North Carolina. Took some photos, but the fenced in pasture was the only dry land. Slog through the marsh to get to the sunny side. Wet shoes, I think this is what the photographers call a "difficult shot"

257 Fox Fox Fox Chicken

This Rooster was painted in the middle of a number of Fox paintings, thus the name Fox Fox Fox Chicken. One of those fox paintings "Fox Eyes" is on the previous post. Could Fox Eyes and this painting be considered a matched pair?

230 Afternoon Impression

Perhaps a better title for this painting would be "Painting with a Corgi II" Not that there is a corgi anywhere in this painting. I took my easel out to paint the roses in the garden late yesterday afternoon, hoping to get some nice slanting light, but the sun had already gone below the trees that are behind our house. So off I went, through the gate and down the driveway to where the trees were still in sunlight. The first painting was started and at this time of day, the sun moves quickly what was still in light would be in shade in a matter of minutes. Not exactly speed painting, but no time to waste, just concentrating. Until the corgi showed up. One of our corgis who decided to hop through the fence and see what was happening. So rather than take him back to the yard and his pen or get a leash, I kept painting and watching him and calling him back ( he still finds many things of more interest to him than my commands) and then holding him by the collar as cars drove by.

The first painting was finished. I had two canvases with me, so I began a second one, this one. Looking back across our pasture, across a honeysuckle covered fence to an old barn and trees silhouetted by the lowering sun.

222 Catching Some Rays

It seems that Winter might be ending, at least for a few days. So Theresa and I jump in the car on Sunday afternoon and take a ride around Granville, Franklin and Warren counties. As usual, it seems that I find most of the interesting subjects just around the corner. It was a nice day, still a bit of chill in the wind, a good day to hunker down and enjoy the warm sun.

217 Mountain Farm Morning

Summer morning in the Great Smoky Mountains. Still cool in the shade, but in the sun is the promise of a hot summer day. Behind me in the trees is a stream. The corn is high and off to the right along the garden fence, the sunflowers are higher still. Sounds good in the middle of February.

209 The Girls

The Girls
5 x 7 Oil on Canvas
SOLD

The Girls have modelled for me a number of times, both together and separately. The colors in these paintings have always intrigued me. We ran across them late on a early spring afternoon. Let me say that again. It was early in Spring, late March, early April here in NC and we were driving up in northern Granville County late in the day. So there was a still that clear winter light with a warm orange cast from the setting sun. This creates, especially on their white faces, a warm light against a cool bluish shadows. Just fun to paint if you like to play with color.

204 Charolais

A pig, now a cow. What's next? A chicken or a frog? A horse or a dog or a cat? Nope. I had to do some gold leaf work out of town, so I have had to plan ahead. Back to today's painting. A Charolais. You can find them lying in the shade of huge old oak trees as you drive down through central Florida. Do you fly in and out of Palm Beach International? Then you probably don't see them and will just have to add painting to your collection.....

201 Young Heifer

At a recent show in northern Virginia, a lot of collectors were interested in paintings of Black Angus. Now I understand that there are a lot of Black Angus in that area, but when it comes to painting, the Herefords (white and brown), Belted Galloways (oreo cows) and Highland Cattle (hairy, shaggy with long horns) make the job much easier.
The white face of the young cow below gives an opportunity to play with colors. Warm whites from the sunlight, neutral/grays in the shadows and some blue reflected lights from the sky.

198 Mountain Barn

Painted outdoors, "on location," looking up "The Hill" to the barns at the Blowing Rock Horse Show on a beautiful summer day in the Blue Ridge Mountains. "The Hill" seems to get steeper every year. I seem to remember going up and down with ease when I first started painting here. Upon a little more reflection, I used a golf cart shuttle quite a bit that first year.

196 Red Rooster

The Red Rooster is the first of new chicken paintings. Though small in size, it is a powerful painting, capable of getting your attention from across the room. Perhaps you can put in on a small table top easel next to your alarm clock.

Finding older paintings and posts on a blog can easily become frustrating. In addition to the page with some of the earlier paintings, new posts will have a image and link to earlier work. Today's painting is Jack, a Jack Russell Terrier

George Carlin once noted that dogs have eyebrows we can see the emotions there. These eyebrows just said it all.

195 Black Angus

I am playing "catch up," today. This is the second painting posted today. A while back we visited a couple of my wife's portrait clients. In addition to the dogs that Theresa painted, they have a farm full of Black Angus. Bob drove us around so that I could take photographs. We started with the young bull and then off to the field where the heifers were. Then down the road to a field full of calves and their mothers, more photos. Finally back to the house to the old bull who was reaching retirement age. A few hundred photos to work with - isn't digital grand.
Here is one of the girls from the heifer's field.

192 Cows, FLA

Okay, I am back at it. More paintings to come, they are all lined up and waiting their turn to get online, so...

Let's look at the origin of today's painting. What I want you to do, the next time you are driving through Florida, you really need to get off the interstates. You can go across on I-10 and get on Rt. 301 and head south down the middle of the state. Now please do pay attention to the speed limit signs. You can stop at the Orange Shop in Citra for some fresh squeezed orange juice. As you near Ocala you can still see pastures full of spreading live oak trees (with spanish moss) and white/cream Charolais cows lying in the shade.
