290 White Pony Adieu

One of the projects I am working on right now is a painting of a girl and her pony. The pony will be leaving at the end of this month, so we went out on a soft autumn afternoon to take photos of them at the barn and out on trails, riding through the woods and across a stream on a wooden bridge. This first painting is an idea, I don't know if we will go farther with this or another image.

264 Dressage Show - Gray

"Painting from Life"  The term "painting from life" is a description for a painting done while looking at a live model as opposed to a sketch of photograph. When painting animals this often means painting from an animal in motion. (Sleeping dogs and cats are one exception.)
So setting up the easel at a dressage show, I quickly learned that to paint horses from life, I should paint at the warm up ring. Rather than going through their program and then leaving the ring, in the warm-up, there is a lot of repetition. To paint this gray, I would look, then paint while the  horse and rider came back into the same position again. Look again, paint again.  Always knowing that in an instant, the horse and rider would leave and my model would be gone. Still, it is a very good exercise in concentration, observation and painting. Starting by capturing the movement of the horse and then its form and finally suggesting details. Unfortunately, working too intensely to make a note of the rider's number...

This painting is a 5 x 7, a bit larger than most of the others in this blog.

249 A Horse Portrait

Today's painting is a commissioned portrait. My client had some very nice photos, including some nice head shots, but the look she liked best was from a full body photograph.

220 White Horse Pike

Another grey horse, this one along with the earlier painting of a draft horse are "thumbnail" paintings. They will be the basis for a much larger painting. I can use them to decide which one to paint larger and a guide for the larger work. If it doesn't look good small, it sure won't look good larger.
The name White Horse Pike is my homage to South Jersey and the Pine Barrens.

219 Gray Draft

We travel to a lot of horse shows, stables, farms and barns for both work and pleasure. One of the most impressive and enjoyable (for me that is) are the draft horses. Here's one, all dressed up, waiting for the carriage classes at the NC State Fair.

197 Pony Painting

Painting a white horse on a black background was a great experiment with color, you can see a post about an earlier painting on my other blog, that I decided to continue with that series. In this painting I used a photo of a white pony taken outdoors on a normal day. I then played with the contast, creating a a brighter, more direct light and darkening the shadows. Then the colors were intensified and played with. All without using photoshop, just paint and imagination.

186 Afternoon Swim

This is one of the two paintings I posted on my non-1hundredpaintings blog, because I just couldn't wait to show them. It was a hot day at the horse show in Aiken SC and the two paintings of horses and water just made me feel a bit cooler. The second painting is already sold, you can see it at www.sfilarsky.blogspot.com, but I am working on a second, larger painting of that subject.

181 Dressage at Fork

This painting was done on location at the Fork Stables a few weeks back during the CIC*** 3 Day Event. The horse (and its rider) participate in a cross country course - uphill, downhill, over jumps and through water, a timed stadium jumping course and dressage. For this painting I was standing at the side of the road looking down into the dressage ring. With a painting like this from life, one has to decide what to paint first. Capture the horse and rider than leisurely(relatively) at the background or the other way around, get the landscape right and then set the horse and rider in it.

Another painting from our Spring trip to Saratoga. This is at the Oklahoma Track. Yes, it's called that and no it's not. It is in NY. Great old barns dating back to the mid 1800's and wonderful light at 5am.

122 Waiting

Yes, I have been at horse shows since September. I think it's beginning to affect me. Wednesday I was honored to be allowed to watch and photograph a local hunt. When I arrived I was handed over to Mr. Fred, the retired huntsman. Mr. Fred drove his Mazda pickup down lanes and across fields. Like a fast boat ride across choppy seas. We waited in one spot for a while, then drove back, down the highway, down a county road and up a dead end road to reach the other side of the hill.

Sitting on the side of a country road, looking down a long driveway waiting for the hounds to show. "They will cross about there and then either head away from us or come toward us and turn..." Mr. Fred was sitting in the truck, I got out for a while to take some photos with the long lens. After half and hour, forty five minutes, the people whose home we were parked in front of must have gotten a bit suspicious, because a sheriff's car pulled up behind, lights flashing. Mr. Fred, who happens to be eighty-nine was able to convince the deputy that we were innocent citizens, just waiting for the hounds. While waiting for the hounds, two riders showed up on the road. Whippers-in, they were there to keep the animals off the road. The study below is of one of them. She was actually standing in the road, but I used a bit of that artistic license.

121 Horse Wash

This study was done from a number of reference photos. I wanted to do a painting of a horse being washed, with the backlight illuminating the spray of water. I am not sure if this will be a layout for a larger painting or if it will head in another direction.
