281 Sunday Afternoon at Devon

The Devon Horse show has always been one of the special shows for me. Held in a historic showgrounds with a variety of disciplines, Hunter/Jumper, Carriages and Coaches, Hackneys and Saddlebreds it offers an abundance of images for painting. Here is a small impressionistic look at one of the Sunday Afternoon carriages. Did I mention that Devon is near Philadelphia, home of the cheesesteak, which has to join beer as one of Ben Franklin's reasons that we know God loves us.
But the painting - trying to capture that feeling of a sunny Sunday afternoon in May. With horses and carriages, red barns with blue trim and all those elements just a joy to paint.

264 Dressage Show - Gray

"Painting from Life"  The term "painting from life" is a description for a painting done while looking at a live model as opposed to a sketch of photograph. When painting animals this often means painting from an animal in motion. (Sleeping dogs and cats are one exception.)
So setting up the easel at a dressage show, I quickly learned that to paint horses from life, I should paint at the warm up ring. Rather than going through their program and then leaving the ring, in the warm-up, there is a lot of repetition. To paint this gray, I would look, then paint while the  horse and rider came back into the same position again. Look again, paint again.  Always knowing that in an instant, the horse and rider would leave and my model would be gone. Still, it is a very good exercise in concentration, observation and painting. Starting by capturing the movement of the horse and then its form and finally suggesting details. Unfortunately, working too intensely to make a note of the rider's number...

This painting is a 5 x 7, a bit larger than most of the others in this blog.

181 Dressage at Fork

This painting was done on location at the Fork Stables a few weeks back during the CIC*** 3 Day Event. The horse (and its rider) participate in a cross country course - uphill, downhill, over jumps and through water, a timed stadium jumping course and dressage. For this painting I was standing at the side of the road looking down into the dressage ring. With a painting like this from life, one has to decide what to paint first. Capture the horse and rider than leisurely(relatively) at the background or the other way around, get the landscape right and then set the horse and rider in it.

150 Lead line

The Blowing Rock Charity Horse asked me to do a painting for the 2010 show poster. I have been looking through photos of the show, gathering references for the work. I came across a photo of this girl and her mom, taken by Cathrin Cammit. It looks like she won the lead line class, that's a blue ribbon in her hand.

121 Horse Wash

This study was done from a number of reference photos. I wanted to do a painting of a horse being washed, with the backlight illuminating the spray of water. I am not sure if this will be a layout for a larger painting or if it will head in another direction.

119 Upperville Oak

When it comes to painting at horse shows, (which if you didn't know, I happen to do a lot. Especially old showgrounds with old grandstands and buildings with character. No landscaping, just landscapes.) the Upperville Horse Show is in my top two (depending on the weather). The Upperville Show has been going on since 1853, the oldest horse show in the USA. (They did have to stop for a few years in the 1860's.) The showgrounds and the rings are filled with old oak trees, which makes for easy painting. Just find a spot to set up the easel, look around and paint.

Since the oaks are living trees and some very old, the show does loose them to disease and storms, but they are constantly replanting trees to continue the tradition. Here is a painting of a jump under an oak which is no longer there.

58 Blue Eyed Hound

Another painting in the Dog in a Golf Cart at the Horse show Series. I saw this fellow at the horse show in Culpepper VA. His owner told me that he is very popular with the photographers. She rescued him from the pound, though she had no intention of getting a dog until she saw him.

7. Back to the Dogs

This morning I joined a group of plein air painters from the Raleigh-Durham NC area in painting at the Fearrington. A beautiful sunny but not hot day. I completed paintings for this project along with the start of a larger garden scene. More about that later.
Today I've gone back to the dogs. Looking back, I seem to be painting a lot of dogs in golf carts. In golf carts at Horse shows. And a good number of Jack Russells in golf carts at horse shows. Maybe like this fellow, they are more relaxed in a golf cart. This scene was at the Duke Children's Classic Horse Show.
