228 Salt Marsh Sunrise Children on the Beach - Paintings Progress

This post is a bit different, but don't worry, there is a nice 4 x 6 oil painting at the end.
I want to show you a painting as it goes through various stages from start to finish. This is a 24 x 30 oil on canvas of a brother and sister at the beach. The photograph that is the basis for this painting was taken by their mother a number of years ago. Is it wrong for me to say that she waited until she found the right artist to capture her vision?
The photo was taken in the late afternoon, a great time to capture the warm light from the setting sun without the squinting in bright sunlight that we get earlier in the day. Usually around here at the North Carolina beaches it also means that you get a grey color to the sand. No problem, we can capture both the light on the figures and on the surrounding beach.

As you can see, the canvas was toned with a warm dull yellow color. The figures were drawn in, the some of the dark and light accents were placed on the canvas give me reference values.

More of the surrounding was sketched in and work begun on the sky and sea. Some color is added to her dress since it is an accent color, taht is, it is different from the colors in the rest of the painting

Many of these photos were taken with a phone, usually when I suddenly remembered that I was documenting this painting. Usually I take a few at the beginning and then the painting takes over and I forget to photograph. Luckily you are able to see this one progress evenly. The camera phone and the fact that I worked on this painting at different locations is the reason for the change in colors that you notice from one photo to the next.

Here the sky and sea are pretty much complete. Working on them first means I won't have to paint around the figures later. Creating a soft look and then leaving it alone as the rest of the painting is worked on helps keep the sky and sea in the background and helps form a sense of depth to the painting.

You can see in this photo that work has begun on the children. The beach in the background has been painted in colors a bit cooler than the sand in the dunes. This helps keep it back where it belongs with the surf and sky. The dune grass has been begun. The dark masses of the grass are important in keeping the composition from becoming to static.

More of the grass has been added and I am now happy with sand in the foreground is coming along.

A closer look. Work has begun on the children and their clothes

More work to the grasses, sand and the children

Features have been added to the boy's face. This is the hard part. To capture the likeness and expression with impressionistic brush strokes takes a lot more planning and work than you would think.

Here is a closer look at the children.

To be continued.......(until the painting is finished)

Now, the painting I promised, this is morning light at the coast....Low Country salt marsh morning.

227 Garden off the Interstate

Spring flowers blooming alongside I440 in Raleigh. After 5 1/2 hours of painting at the Small Paintings, Big Results workshop, the students persuaded me to do a final demonstration painting. This is the view out the back door of the Jerry's Artarama store.

226 Clouds and Sea

Here is a small painting that has potential to become a larger work. It is a "thumbnail" painting. The shapes and colors of the painting are worked out in a small format so when work begins on the larger painting I can start mixing all the right colors. At the recent small paintings workshop in Raleigh this painting was used to show how perspective is used in painting the sky and clouds.

223 Wild Rabbit

Unfortunately for our dogs, but fortunately for the rabbits, out property is fenced in to keep a small dog from getting out which means that rabbits can't get in. They hop across the driveway, are in the road, in the field next door, but the dogs have to be content chasing squirrels away from the bird feeders.

There hasn't been many rabbit paintings in this project, this is probably the fourth rabbit out of two hundred and twenty three paintings

222 Catching Some Rays

It seems that Winter might be ending, at least for a few days. So Theresa and I jump in the car on Sunday afternoon and take a ride around Granville, Franklin and Warren counties. As usual, it seems that I find most of the interesting subjects just around the corner. It was a nice day, still a bit of chill in the wind, a good day to hunker down and enjoy the warm sun.

220 White Horse Pike

Another grey horse, this one along with the earlier painting of a draft horse are "thumbnail" paintings. They will be the basis for a much larger painting. I can use them to decide which one to paint larger and a guide for the larger work. If it doesn't look good small, it sure won't look good larger.
The name White Horse Pike is my homage to South Jersey and the Pine Barrens.

219 Gray Draft

We travel to a lot of horse shows, stables, farms and barns for both work and pleasure. One of the most impressive and enjoyable (for me that is) are the draft horses. Here's one, all dressed up, waiting for the carriage classes at the NC State Fair.

218 Sailing Away

What better way to spend a February day than dreaming of the tropics. Sailing on the trade winds. Blue sky, blue sea, no mud, no snow. I am here in the states, but the schooner Russamee is in the Caribbean. After seeing this painting, one woman commented that sailing was on her "bucket list." She needs to go sailing now, for perchance it takes, she will go sailing again and again or it will lie lows, nagging in your subconscious. Like an painter who isn't painting, a feeling of something undone.

217 Mountain Farm Morning

Summer morning in the Great Smoky Mountains. Still cool in the shade, but in the sun is the promise of a hot summer day. Behind me in the trees is a stream. The corn is high and off to the right along the garden fence, the sunflowers are higher still. Sounds good in the middle of February.

216 A Hard Run

A German Shorthaired Pointer after a hard run on a cold winter morning. That green in the background represents the pines at the edge of the field. It was pointed out to me that he has "psycho eyes" in the painting. A trick of the sunlight, but don't German Shorthaireds alway have psycho eyes?

215 A Corgi in Winter

Time for another Corgi painting. My wife, Theresa, set this photo near my easel. I took the hint. A corgi out in the snow on a beautiful sunny day. Wonderful backlight on the dog, with sun sparkling off the snow.
Painting winter and snow paintings on a toned background is really the only way for me. You paint the figures and landscape, the shadows in the snow and then come on with the white, brightening the painting as you add a brushstroke there and a brushstroke here, building up to the bright winter day.

214 In the Flock

I am always amazed at the diversity here just outside Raleigh NC. From longhorn cows to Glouscestershire Old Spots within twenty miles of our house. Old tobacco barns on old tobacco farms, dairy barns on dairy farms, all around the corner. Chickens, guineas, donkeys just down our road. Albino deer running across the front yard, driving the dogs nuts. Squirrels and rabbits. Tree frogs....
Today's painting, Theresa and I took a drive around the county a week or so ago and came across a flock of sheep. Unlike the longhorns down the road, they decided they didn't want us around and began moving away. We had to move quickly to get the cameras out to take photos to use as reference for paintings. On this painting I decided to move the calendar forward a bit and green up their pasture.

212 Evening Fire

I had a very hard time photographing this painting and I am still not very satisfied with the image, it just doesn't show the color and the light in the original.

Here you see another of my repeat models. Fidget has been painted lying on the carpet in the sun, on the piano bench, lying in the sun, outside in the evening light and lying in the sun.

Scroll down and you can see a close up of the painting. The bumps and texture in the painting are actually the threads of the canvas.

211 Corgi Puppy 2

Throop, pronounced "troop" like the Thames River, is the latest addition here at the studio. At ten weeks old he was commanding from the top of the front porch steps, surveying the yard whose security has been placed in his capable paws. Now nearly one year later, he still takes his work seriously, coming inside for a break or nap. I photographed this painting as it progressed to give you a look at the painting process.

Another one of my perennial models, Rosie our Corgi. Looking back, I see a lot of Corgi paintings with a pensive or worried expression. Am I anthropomorphizing a bit much? You would think so unless you lived with one of these creatures. Getting back to the painting, I have decided to give you a happy corgi this time.

209 The Girls

The Girls
5 x 7 Oil on Canvas
SOLD

The Girls have modelled for me a number of times, both together and separately. The colors in these paintings have always intrigued me. We ran across them late on a early spring afternoon. Let me say that again. It was early in Spring, late March, early April here in NC and we were driving up in northern Granville County late in the day. So there was a still that clear winter light with a warm orange cast from the setting sun. This creates, especially on their white faces, a warm light against a cool bluish shadows. Just fun to paint if you like to play with color.
