170 Rottweiler

When my wife, Theresa, was recently working with Burning Oak Studios recording a DVD on How to Paint the Family Dog, I helped her with a scene on how to and how not to photograph your dog. DaVinci our 106lb Rottweiler/lapdog was one of the stars. I stole one of Theresa's photos to use for this painting.

169 Red Red Tree Frog

No, I wasn't listening to UB40's Red Red Wine while painting this, though I just put it on to listen to while writing this post. I painted this while at a horse sale of all places. The red background that is the beginning of most of my oil paintings is plain to see here. In fact I was getting ready to start on the background leaves when I decided that I liked it fine the way it was. So, it was finished!

168 Ready for Spring - Sportfishing

I came across these two, ready for the first nice weekend while prowling around Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, NC. I had met with a portrait client earlier and was kicking myself for not loading the easel and paints. The day started out cloudy and foggy after the previous day of cold and rain. By the time I hit Wilmington it was sunny and warm. The following day I painted this while it rained and then snowed. READY FOR SPRING!

167 The Crossing

Cows - Action paintings. A few members of the herd crossing a creek. We came across this herd while driving around the countryside a few weeks ago - the snow had melted.
I walked up to the fence to get a few photographs. The cows saw me and began to move towards me. More cows came out of the trees and over the hill. Then they started bellowing. Yes! I got action photos.
This painting at 5 x 7 is a bit larger than most of the paintings in this project.

166 Barn in Snow

Barn in Snow
4 x 6 Oil on canvas
$100. shipping included

Maybe I should wait until summer to post this painting. I know even here in North Carolina I have seen enough snow for this year, so I can imagine other parts of the country are ready for this winter to end. At least down here the snow doesn't last, which means a couple of things. The roads will be clear in a day or two, despite the efforts of the highway department. Beautiful sunny days with snow on the ground that are an inspiration to paint are rare. And last, it will soon become more mud. Ready for spring.
Back to the painting. This old tobacco barn with attached shed has been the subject of a number of my paintings. The other day I happened by as the sun broke out with steel blue clouds behind. It cried out to be painted, so I did. Think how refreshing it will be to look at when August rolls around...

160 Snow Bird

Today we got seven inches of snow and a couple inches of sleet on top.We filled the feeders three times today. Probably put out over 5 lbs of sunflower seeds in the bird feeders. I caught this bird as it sat on a tree outside the kitchen window. Off to the studio (it's twenty five feet from the house) to work on this painting. The colors are a little more subtle, but there are oranges and blues that might not make the transition to the computer screen.

157 Titmouse

With winter being here, titmice, chickadees, juncos, cardinals and even woodpeckers are eating at the bird feeders. Fifty pound bags of sunflower seeds seem to disappear in days. Maybe not days.... The little titmouse goes to the feeder, takes one seed in its beak and flies off to a tree branch were it works on the seed, eats it and flies back. I wonder how it gets enough food. Sort of like eating steamed crabs, go through about a half a dozen and then go get a meal....

152 Farm Pond with Cedars 2

Part 2 of the previous post. Why a diptych (two separate paintings meant to show as one)? I was anxious to start a painting of the farm. I was deeply involved in finishing commissioned painting, so I decided to do a more intimate size painting, but the proportions of the canvas just wouldn't work. I happened to have two canvases on the easel at the time, so, "Why not a diptych?" The two paintings as shown together below.

151 Farm Pond and Cedars I

A farm near Oxford. Rows of cedars along the fence line. Rolling hills. I have driven past this farm for nearly twenty years. The small conical cedars growing along the fence have become large trees. A couple of houses have been added but it remains a gem in the landscape of North Carolina.

149 Halflinger

This painting is on a 6 x 6 canvas. Last month I was commissioned to paint five pony paintings on 6 x 6 canvases. Since I really hadn't worked in a square format before (I like to paint these paintings a standard size that can be easily framed. The five pony paintings were hung as a group unframed.) so I bought a few extra to work with.
My wife had a halflinger named Alf, a few years ago, I thought he was a great horse (he neither kicked or bit me), so I decided paint one. Since he was 14.1 and 1200lbs, I guess this can also be considered a pony painting.

148 Pasture at Dawn

This painting is the second of the "memory" paintings. I am trying to capture the colors and clouds in the morning light. The cloud shapes are constantly changing. It's worse than a seascape, as waves have a regularity to them. Though constantly moving, the waves basic shape stays the same. As the sun rises and sets, the morning and evening light changes color and intensity by the minute. The closer to the horizon, the quicker the change.

The painting was done from some notes and scribbled lines I jotted down as the sun rose. It wasn't until a few days later that I actually painted it. Have you ever found notes that you wrote to yourself, and wondered what in the heck you were trying to say? Well, after a lapse of a couple of days, those color notes and squiggly lines didn't convey all the information that they did when I wrote them.

But it is still early in this project. I will try make up some abbreviations for colors and values, and standardize the lines. One type for hard edges, another for soft edges. And a few other shorthand notes.

Here is the sketch and notes for this painting

147 At the Gate

Last month, I was commissioned to create a painting of a nearby farm. As the seasons had already changed from Autumn to Winter, I had to rely on photographs taken earlier. Among the views of the cabin and barn and ponds were a number of cow and calf photos. So of course, I had to paint the cows. Here is the first.

How to paint

Finishing up those Christmas commissions....here is another video, painting a waterlily.

It is recorded in real time, not high speed "fast painting." Though more has been edited out then left in. Mostly shots of the painting with nothing happening while I mix colors and decide what to paint next. The painting is 3" x 5" Don't turn up the volume, there is no soundtrack.

145 Painted Bunting

I was first introduced to the Bunting family by an Indigo Bunting in the vegetable garden. A iridescent blue, it made the bluebirds and jays look drab. But I never saw the Painted Bunting in North Carolina. A few years back, when we were traveling back and forth to Art Shows in Florida, we happened to be staying in Savannah when the Painted Buntings were migrating through. We left the Isle of Hope to go to Skidaway Nature Center. The Nature Center there was all set up and ready for both the people and the birds, with scopes set up inside to view the feeders behind the Nature Center Building. We got our first sight of the there. Afterward we went hiking through the woods and marshes. We saw a number of the painted buntings, but to be honest, if we hadn't seen them at the feeder, we would never have known what we were looking at in the wild. So here is my Painted Bunting in the pines and oaks of Coastal Georgia in early Spring.

144 Dawn

This painting began as an exercise. Since all painting is from memory, you are either looking at the canvas or what you are painting. You can get an overall view if you step back a ways and look at the canvas in the landscape, but when it comes to looking at a specific shape or form you can only concentrate on one at a time. I was sitting in the studio yesterday morning as the sun rose. I did a rough sketch and made some color notes, such as "light blue fading to dull orange", while atrying to remember the scene. I painted it this evening, and am happy with it.

142 Bald Rooster

Since I am watching the sunrise as I add the photo of this painting, post it to the blog, email updates to my subscribers, it's only fitting that it is a painting of a rooster. Thankfully, our neighbors have chickens, so we get to enjoy the rooster crowing vicariously. Also the donkey which is about a quarter mile down the road. Of course, Oreo the mama goat's bleating most likely annoys our neighbors enough to make us part of the Great Countryside Morning Symphony.

I am not sure of the breed of this fellow, so I call him the Bald Rooster, his coloring reminds me of a Bald Eagle.

140 Highland Cattle

I have been having a lot of fun painting birds lately. So why not paint a cow again. Just for a day or so. It's getting cold again (at least for here) but not as cold as the highlands of Scotland. To get to the point, Highland Cattle, originally from Scotland have long heavy coats which keep them warm through the wild Highland winters. Pretty wild looking creatures

138 Goldfinch

I am continuing with a series of bird paintings. Today's painting is the American Goldfinch. It's a sure sign of summer when their dull mustard plumage turns bright yellow and they fly across the yard in their distinctive flight , a series of arcs as they flap and rest, flap and rest. If it keeps raining here, we will need a pair of these for the ark.
