262 Ross Castle

Usually, a small painting is done as a study for a larger one. In this case, it was the other way around. I painted a large acrylic, 16 x 20 of this scene for a painting class that was being held on St. Patrick's Day. It was based on a photo sent to me by a friend whose ancestral home was Ross Castle. Small paintings need simple elegant design and so do paintings for a class. So it was only natural to add Ross Castle to the 1hundred paintings series. 

Now I am thinking of looking through photos of our trip to Killarney. I did a number of watercolours while there, but the ruins of an 12th century priory on the island of Inishfallen across the lake from Ross Castle still remind me that they need painting also....

261 Sunny Afternoon

Another example of what you see on the side of the road in North Carolina. Took some photos, but the fenced in pasture was the only dry land. Slog through the marsh to get to the sunny side. Wet shoes, I think this is what the photographers call a "difficult shot"

250 A Granddaughter

I found a photograph of a beautiful baby girl amongst my portrait artist wife Theresa files. A lot of fun to paint but boy, are those subtle colours and values tricky to paint. Not some craggy old sea captain with chiselled features, dark shadow and obvious lines. Just minute changes in color temperature and slight darkening or lightening to capture that smooth baby face.

Brownie is one of the dogs from the Blowing Rock Horse Show that I painted this year. My client said that when he looks at her husband, the his ears drop and a look of pure adoration is in his eyes. So we ended up with a painting focusing in on the eyes with enough space to show the lowered ears.

244 Tropical Cruise

Another DayDream/Wishful Thinking painting. Though I was sitting indoors at the NCHJA Horse Show, working in a hot, dusty environment, there is no law that says I have to be there both physically and mentally. Somewhere inside I was on a schooner, leaving a tropical island heading off into a new adventure. I am thinking a nice breeze, a cool drink, my hand on the helm - no, let someone else worry about that-lay back on the deck, look up at the sails and watch the clouds pass by.

This painting is name Deep Run Fox for two reasons. One the fox head is similar to that of the logo of the Deep Run Hunt Club. The second is that it was painted while at the Deep Run Horse Show which is held at the Hunt Club. I am especially pleased with the eyes.

242 Oriental Yacht Club

You can't put on too many airs when your yacht club is sited next to the fish house and shrimp boats. The Oriental Yacht Club is not exclusively for sailors of Asian heritage, it's name comes from the town of Oriental, NC which in turn got it's name from a ship's nameboard with "Oriental" on it that washed up on the shore. A beautiful summer's day on the Pamlico Sound, no rain, wind or thunderstorms that afternoon.

A beautiful Sunday afternoon in Spring. A free concert outdoors. An new amphitheater, with wide terraced grass tiers, stone walls and walkways. But it seems empty. Off to the sides under the old oak trees of the homestead turned park are the crowds. So this was painted standing in the open looking back to everyone enjoying the shade.
