Old Barn at Warrenton Horse Show

One of the stables at the Warrenton Horse Show. One of the great old Virginia horse shows.I really don't know how old they are, but I was able to do this painting before they were repainted all green. So this painting still shows the rusty red metal roofing and the wear and tear on the paint and boards. I know repainting was needed to help preserve them, but spraying everything the same color green doesn't have the same aesthetic.

Deep Run Horse Show Plein Air Painting

The Deep Run Horse Show, An original one of a kind 8 x 10 oil painting on linen panel looking at the show grounds from the end of the ring. It was actually painted at that location, before the clouds massed up and became a summer thunderstorm.  I worked to create a rich depth of color, with strong brush strokes to achieve the overall feel of the painting! A moment in time.

I try to create beautiful, jewel like, but never garish, tones and colors in his impressionistic oil paintings. Always exploring both locations and techniques and materials, including making an oil painting medium (a 3 month long process!) that is non-toxic and incorporate it into my paintings. Many paintings are painted from life and outdoors (plein air) and just as many are special requests from collectors for paintings of their homes, barns, animals, child or a special quiet corner of a garden.

Still painting.... Here are some recent paintings, done one day apart.  I have been working on more and more commissions, larger paintings and other work.

The models were provided by our chickens, including Dorkings, Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns and Golden Comets. We do have one Ameraucana hen but she has started laying yet. (At least not where we can find her blue green eggs.)

Please click on the image to see the larger/uncropped painting  (More egg paintings coming soon. These two have been sold)

290 White Pony Adieu

One of the projects I am working on right now is a painting of a girl and her pony. The pony will be leaving at the end of this month, so we went out on a soft autumn afternoon to take photos of them at the barn and out on trails, riding through the woods and across a stream on a wooden bridge. This first painting is an idea, I don't know if we will go farther with this or another image.

286 Jersey on the Lawn

We came across this young Jersey cow along with three others not far from our studio. They were busy keeping the grass cut on the front lawn of an old homestead. We got out to take photos (only had phones, not the real cameras), the owner walked up and we got to talking. He was getting ready to take them to a back field for Autumn and Winter but was running a bit late that afternoon. Ten minutes later and they would have been gone from view of the road and remained unknown to us. He told us that he had been planning to buy one of the four from a retiring farmer nearby, but he had ended up in the hospital before completing the deal. While there, his wife completed the purchase. Unsure of exactly which cow he wanted, she bought all four.
This small painting is the first of the Jersey paintings, one of which will end up as a 30" x 40" or a 36" x 48" painting.

283 Old John Deere

No, it's not a giant mechanized frog from the Fifties. Nor is it proof that aliens have been among us. I found this old John Deere tractor in a shed.  I was down in South Carolina, trying to paint on a day that wasn't too hot or rainy. While walking the farm, looking for the right view to capture all the important elements for the farm painting, I found it. This machine has character. Like a time worn face that show the years of life and love, it tells of years in the fields.  I'm hooked. In fact the next painting will be another old tractor.

282 Foothills Farm

We passed this farm near Marion, NC and had to turn back and stop. Hay had just been cut and was being raked into windrows. We both thought, "I hope it doesn't rain before the get it up."
I can't resist a red barn with sun shining on a tin roof, so here it is.

281 Sunday Afternoon at Devon

The Devon Horse show has always been one of the special shows for me. Held in a historic showgrounds with a variety of disciplines, Hunter/Jumper, Carriages and Coaches, Hackneys and Saddlebreds it offers an abundance of images for painting. Here is a small impressionistic look at one of the Sunday Afternoon carriages. Did I mention that Devon is near Philadelphia, home of the cheesesteak, which has to join beer as one of Ben Franklin's reasons that we know God loves us.
But the painting - trying to capture that feeling of a sunny Sunday afternoon in May. With horses and carriages, red barns with blue trim and all those elements just a joy to paint.
