46 Wild Eyed Cow

Again, I apologize to those of you who are interested in purchasing a painting, only to find that it has been sold as soon as I post it. At the horse show last week there was a lot of interest in these paintings and I had a number of multiple paintings sales. The price and size make them ideal for gifts. They can be equisitely framed for almost no money. There is always someplace that they can hang and can easily be grouped.

Remember the Eighties? Don Henley or one of those ex-Eagles had a song out "All she wants to do is dance." One line refers to "wild eyed pistol wavers." Well, this is my dairy cow version of the wild eyed pistol waver. No mad cow disease here, just some intense emotion.

45 Tree Frog

What a week it has been. The Horse Show is over and it was a good show for us. In addition to showing our work and creating these paintigs, I was able to complete a commissioned portrait while working there. More info at http://www.sfilarsky.blogspot.com
Here is a Pine Barrens Tree Frog, named after one of it's habitats, the New Jersey Pine Barrens. A rather intense but amiable expression on this frog.

44. Young Holstein

A young Holstein heifer, no it's a Friesian.  While at the horse show yesterday, a young lady studying animal science at NC State enlightened me. The name depends on where you are. America ( holstein ) or Europe ( friesian ). There are also Holstein-Friesian. If  I have this right, Holstein-Friesians were imported to in the US in the 1800's.  A cattle disease in Europe caused the end of the importing. In Europe, the cattle were used for both dairy and beef, while in the US they were developed strictly as dairy cows. European cows became the Friesians and the US the Holsteins. Later after World War II, when dairy and beef production in Europe became more specialized, the US Hosteins were crossed with the European stock for dairy production, thus the Holstein-Friesian. The breed originated in a northern region of what is now the Netherlands, Friesland. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the German region of Holstein.

43, Holstein Calf

While painting at the horse show, I get lots of encouragement, inspiration and suggestions. The consesus is....more black and white cows!
I find that when I am painting a commission or working on a painting that I think someone will like there is an added depth to the creative process. It's no longer just an "I want to do this..." self centered activity (not nessecarily bad) but using my skills and talents to help someone else express themselves. Using the metaphor of communication, it is having a conversation with someone, opposed to standing an talking to oneself and having others overhear.
The commissioned work can lead to new learning. Solving problems and trying new and different ideas.

38. Whippet

I want to let everyone know, that despite the way it looks, I am not posting paintings that have been previously sold. Some paintings were done from suggestions by my collectors and others have been bought almost immediately after I posted them.
My wife Theresa brought me a photograph of this whippet. It had been participating in a photo shoot she was doing for a portrait of 2 teenaged girls.

37. White Bird

Beware of "Chick Day" at Southern States. Free chicks with the purchase of a bag of feed. This is probably where the drug dealers learned their sales techniques, first time is free....  Your wife and children will come home, "Honey, we need to build a chick coop.   And we need to build it now...."
I was painting this on what was one of the hottest days this year. It didn't quite reach 100, but considering that it was raining and in the 70's for most of the week, it was hot. To get a bit of topic, I was struck by the similarity of the song "Hot Summer Day" by the group Its a Beautiful Day and Borodin's "On the Steppes of Central Asia" They both use a single violin playing a high thin theme to give the impression of the heat rising off the ground and the hot sun on your back.
I am not totally coming from left field here, Its a Beautiful Day had a big hit with the song "White Bird" way back when.  So that's two connections..
I hope you enjoyed this look into how the mind of the artist works.....Here's the painting

34. Jessie

Here is a portrait of Jessie. Jessie is now 15 or 16. Jessie was found alongside the road late one night. Our daughter Kelly was coming home from work about 11pm and to quote her. " I went by and when I looked back in the rear view mirror and she was sitting in the middle of the road watching me drive off." Jessie came home with Kelly. Theresa and I heard the knock on the bedroom door. "Look what I found on the way home." Before Theresa could finish saying no, Jessie had gotten on the floor and crawled over to her. Lying in front of Theresa, Jessie put her head on Theresa's feet and looked up......
The next day, Jessie had already figured out our property lines and was defending her territory from strangers....  I will have to do another painting of Jessie so I can tell more stories about her.

33. Jersey Rabbit 2

A few years back, we had taken a drive to the Jersey Shore with a ride on the Cape May Ferry from Delaware. It was evening as we got on the Garden State Parkway. On the trip from Cape May to Long Beach Island we amused ourselves ( Life is Grand if you are easily amused and entertained ) counting rabbits on the roadside. The total was somewhere around 72 -74. Two years later we made the same trip and the count was zero.
This fellow is a companion of the rabbit from painting 16. Is this a case of Jack London's Call of the Wild on a slightly different level.

31. Feeding the Squirrels

"Easily entertained" could be the used to describe my family.  Feed peanuts to the squirrels on the patio with the dog inside behind to sliding glass doors. The family dog has grown used to them, but when Theresa and I go to PA to visit with Rosie and Louis, they go nuts. We can get great photos with the telephoto lens as the squirrels are often not more than six inches away. This fellow had already grabbed his prize and was heading away to eat in peace.

29. Woman with Watering Can

About a month ago, I loaded the easel into the car and headed down the NC Farmer's Market. May is a great time to go and paint. All the nurseries bring their flowers and plants to sell. I painted a 9x12 oil there and took some photos to work from later in the studio. Under some tents a bit away from the main building was a herb farm was set up selling plants. Since there were no water lines to the area, a watering can was being used to water the plants.

28. Lots of Pigs

Here is the story to date. One week ago, Tuesday June 9, 2009 at about 8am I turned on my computer. It wouldn't load windows. It wouldn't do anything..... long story short - hard drive was gone. No Data. I had a new hard drive installed. Had the operating system installed. Now I have been discovering what was not backed up - recent photos, customer and client names, etc etc. I have been reloading programs and reloading them and discovering the ones that I forgot I had but needed........Downloading website files to computer to back them up before I make any changes....
In a previous painting, you met Cookie, one of the two goats we added last month. While we were picking them up at the farm, we saw a pot bellied pig with a slew of piglets running around. Theresa suggested that a painting of nursing piglets. I think that it has an abstract quality to it, like Monet's haystacks....

27. Willie the Llama

The story of this painting goes back to the early days of Theresa and my marriage. I was reading an article in Smithsonian magazine about llamas. I said "Hey honey, look at these llamas." and handed her the magazine. It wasn't long before we were driving to the mountains to take a look at a llamas. Not to look at any llamas, but two specific llamas. Willie and Magic Man were two males that ended up living with us for a number of years. Lots of stories about these two.

21. A Sheep's Head

"I don't see any sheep." was one of the comments I heard at the CDI Raleigh Horse show where I was exhibiting these paintings along with larger works and portraits by my wife, Theresa. Since sheep were "on my list", that comment made me move them forward to the front of the line. I do have a number of ideas for future paintings that don't involve animals and I hope I can get to them. But not until I have painted a few more pigs.....

20. Cookie the Goat

Here at the old Homestead we have lived the past few months without any goats. I wasn't aware that this was a problem for my wife. Well, it was and she solved it. Our new goats are Oreo and Cookie, two female dwarf pygmy goats. Cookie was named Shorty before she moved here, but Shorty seemed a bit too masculine for her, so she's Cookie now. Both goats have horns and the dogs have learned to keep away. Shadow the pony is getting used to them, but still tries to stomp them occassionally.

19. Gypsy Laddie O

This painting is based on a photograph my wife took while down in Florida. The Gypsy Vanner horse she photographed was actually much darker. But like painting black cows, they just aren't as much fun, colorwise. I titled this painting after old scottish ballad The Gypsy Laddie. While painting ( and even now when looking at it ) the refrain of Tannahill Weavers version kept running through my head... Laddie-o, laddie-o, follow the gyspy laddie-o.

Belted Galloway Cows. They were originally imported from Galloway in Scotland. One of the first to import them was Harry Prock of Hapwood Farm in Whitemarsh, PA in 1950. Perhaps that explains there popularity in southeast PA. Here is a painting of some from Doe Run, near Unionville, PA.

16. Jersey Rabbit

One Hundred paintings in one hundred days. Doesn't that mean a painting a day? So where haveI been and where are the paintings?

I have been painting. I arrived home for the Devon Horse show last Wednesday night after a ten hour drive. The next morning I was at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, setting up for the CDI show. The show went from eight in the morning until 9:30 at night. While I was painting, I was just too tired to put the paintings on this blog and email updates. What about yesterday? When I checked my email, I found out that a number of the "buy it now" buttons on the blog were not working. So needless to say, hours were spent until that little bit of html code was found.

That's my story...

So here we are, back to the paintings. This fellow here also lives at the Jersey Shore. His painting was on display at the CDI and was sold there.
