137 Blue Jay

Here is the second in the series of bird paintings. Or a series of paintings of birds that are blue. I have to admit that I am very pleased with the way this painting turned out. Sometimes when I work at a painting, paying attention to colors, "Is that too warm or too cool," the values, "Should the edge of that shadow be just a bit lighter?" the form, composition and all the other elements, that I am taken by surprise by the finished product. Often the last few touches take the painting from "I'm going to thow this out." to "Wow! Did I just do that?"

136 Belted Gallowy - The Oreo Cow

After what seemed like months of being at indoor shows, I had to go to the mountains. Open views and blue skies. I can go just about anywhere on canvas. I really like the way the light plays on this cow. The work and the reward of these paintings is creating the three dimensional form with a few brushstrokes.

135 Black Rooster

No, this is not the second painting in the "Bird Series." One of the comments I got at the show was "I really like the chickens." So, here's another one and there probably will be more coming.

I do want to thank everyone reading this blog. At the shows I have been pleasantly surprised by people stopping by and telling me that they have been following these paintings. Sitting here alone at the computer (I am totally incapable of writing when there is anything else going on around me), sending these posts out into cyberspace, I sometimes wonder, "Just who is reading them?"
So I am asking for your feedback. Please feel free to comment on these posts. If you now own one of these paintings, you can also share your comments on it.
Another comment that sort of took me by surprise is "So that's what they look like." I guess since I am painting them, photographing them, hanging, framing and displaying them I just assume that everyone has a grasp of what the actual paintings look like. I was about to put up an image of the paintings on display, but I have had to switch computers in the middle of this post as mine has decided that it wants time off. Hopefully in the next day or so I will be able to post that photo.

133 Sitting Tree Frog

I was at a hunter jumper show when I painted this green tree frog. I have been thinking, should I change my tag line to "Equestrian Landscapes - Tree Frog and Pig Paintings?"

131 Pond, Willow and White Duck

Ah, the Artist's Life. We have been exhibiting our work at horse shows in the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, NC since the last week of September. Yesterday afternoon our last show ended a bit earlier than expected and I broke down and loaded up our display and paintings last night and was able to enjoy a sunny day at home, mostly sitting on the porch....

Despite the work involved and total upheaval of our work schedule, the shows give us a chance to meet with our collectors and portrait clients, past present and future.

About today's painting. The subject was suggested by one of my collectors who was at one of the shows last month. A pond with a willow tree and a white duck. My first thought was a view of the pond, willow tree at one end, the duck swimming somewhere in the middle. My second idea was this one, the duck under the willow branches. What I really enjoy about doing commissions is that it stretches your creativity muscle. Many artists look at any requirements by a client as somehow impinging on their creativity, when actually the opposite is true. Working within parameters that are not your own force you to use your creativity to its fullest.

131 Sycamore by Paddock at Keeneland

As you might have noticed my paintings are not always about the obvious subject. At the horse shows, I don't paint a beautiful going over a jump, but the view over an old fence to the barns behind the ring.
My trip to Keeneland in Lexington, KY was not during the seasons, but between. There were still horses around, but the atmosphere was quiet. Here is a painting of the old sycamore tree at the paddock in the morning light. In the background are statues of jockeys painted in the colors of the race winners.

130 Pigs - Mother and Child

Everyone loves paintings of mothers and children. Look at Mary Cassatt. She hangs in museums around the world. She just didn't paint pigs. Well, maybe there weren't any British Saddlebacks around for her to paint in Paris.

129 Blowing Rock View down from the Wall

This second painting from my latest trip to Blowing Rock zooms in a bit more on the trees on the ridges of the mountains. The sunlight coming over the mountain catches on spots of gold and orange trees.

I tried taking photos from the car while driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway. Since I was unable to stop at the most interesting spots, I resorted to just pointing the camera in the general direction and pressing the shutter button. I was pleasantly suprised at the results. I was even able to catch a couple of cows in some shots.

126 Blowing Rock View from Wall

I was back in Blowing Rock in the NC mountains this past week. The leaves had turned color, some were gone and the mountains were blue and grey with spots of orange, gold, red and of course, green pines and hemlocks. I set up the easel down the road from the horse show grounds at "The Wall" a popular spot for drinking wine in the summer.

The two paintings I did became almost abstract as focused on painting just a small part of the hillsides.

125 Portrait of Fox Hound

This portrait of a PennMaryDel Foxhound was based on photos I took on my excursion with Mr. Fred as noted in an earlier post. I also traveled with him at the hunt's opening meet. A bit different experience. More photographers than horses it seemed. And as far as listening for the hounds, there were about 80 other people having a good time with us...
