15. Hurricane

Here is another painting of Hurricane, a fourteen year old wired hair fox terrier. After his owners left the room, he leaned over on to the pillow and didn't move until I finished the painting.
The light on my easel was from an sliding door which opened onto a large covered porch. I couldn't actually see enough to distinguish the dark colors that I mixed on the palette. After working with the same colors on my palette for years, you begin to learn how a bit of ultramarine blue and a little more burnt sienna make a nice dark brown. So I did a bit of mixing my dark colors from memory.
I have addeed a page on my website with a gallery of all the paintings to date.

14. Working with a Live Model

I finished my stint of plein air painting at the Devon Horse Show yesterday. Today I drove down to the Shore (Jersey) for a day before heading back to NC. When I arrived here, my plans for a few nice seascapes, beach scenes were washed away by the weather. Fifty some degrees and raining. But when one door closes another opens.... I was given the opportunity to work from a live model. A semi sleeping 14 year old Wire Haired Fox Terrier named Hurricane. Hurricane has been the subject of a painting a while back. Today he was very cooperative and posed on the couch for hours.

13. Devon Again

This painting was fun. I found a great spot in the shade (with a breeze) near the rail. A Pony Jumpers class. Those little guys were a blast to watch. In front of me was a jump that could only be at Devon. So I painted it.
I still wonder why everything at Devon is painted Carolina Blue?

12. Devon Tower

The cupolas on the grandstand at Devon are another indentifying features. Yesterday (Saturday) afternoon, I drove down to Unionville and Doe Run, looking at all the wonderful locations to paint. What do I see in the fields there? Belted Galloway Cows!

11. Devon Horse Show - Grandstand Flowers

Another day paintings at the Devon Horse Show. A beautiful summer day. I have been in Philly since Thursday, three days and still haven't had a cheesesteak. My arteries are probably thanking me. Another long day trying to get this up before midnight. So not too much to say.

The showgrounds in Devon are in the middle of town and just about everything is painted Devon Blue.

10. Devon Horse Show

I'm back at the Devon Horse Show. There is something different about Devon. With the show in a small area along with a village of shops and a midway with Ferris wheel and other rides, it is not your ordinary horse show. Not to mention the high caliber of horses and riders. I arrived at Devon at 8:00 am, after a surprisingly quick and quiet commute. Everyone must have taken an extra day off for the holiday. Walked round the show seeing familiar faces from last year. I worked on some larger paintings and decided to do some more intimate sized paintings for this project. This painting is of the ingate into the main ring, The Dixon Oval. Entrance to the ring is under the sign, Devon Horse Show Where Champions Meet

9. Oreo Cows

Another painting of the Belted Galloway Cows at Fearrington Village. Driving up to Philadelphia from home in North Carolina for the Devon Horse Show, I kept passing farms and landscapes that made me want to pull over, stop and get out the easel and paint. As I drove up the Eastern Shore of Maryland, the sun was almost setting, sending golden light out onto the fields and barns of this still rural landscape. Had to keep driving, have to paint at the show tomorrow....

Painting the Cows at Fearrington Village. Thanks to Vicky Wilson for the photo

I made me appreciate how lucky I am that I can take the time to go and paint in these wonderful locations. From the quiet of the pasture to the hustle and bustle of the horse show. Here is another of the Belted Galloway paintings from my trip to Fearrington Village.

8. Belted Galloways at Fearrington

Yesterday I joined with a group of plein air painters from PAINTNC. We met a Fearrington Village, a community located on a former dairy farm. The farmhouse and barn have become the nucleus for a village of shops and gardens at the heart of the community. One of the features of the Village are the belted galloway cows are rare breed from Scotland that had been at the farm since the 1950's. It was a sunny day, but windy. Cool for May in North Carolina and a great day to paint. The painters spread out from the roadside by the farm to the gardens in the village. I set up next to the barn and waited patiently for the cows to move out into the sun. And waited. And waited. It probably was only five minutes, but I was ready to paint. Finally, a few moved into position. I began to paint. All the cows began to move. They stood still for a bit, I began to paint, they moved. It was an exercise in quick sketching and working from memory. I was able to complete a couple of these intimate sized paintings that are posted here and begin a larger garden painting.
Here are the "Oreo" cows.

7. Back to the Dogs

This morning I joined a group of plein air painters from the Raleigh-Durham NC area in painting at the Fearrington. A beautiful sunny but not hot day. I completed paintings for this project along with the start of a larger garden scene. More about that later.
Today I've gone back to the dogs. Looking back, I seem to be painting a lot of dogs in golf carts. In golf carts at Horse shows. And a good number of Jack Russells in golf carts at horse shows. Maybe like this fellow, they are more relaxed in a golf cart. This scene was at the Duke Children's Classic Horse Show.

6. Something a bit different

It's already day six. Only 94 more to go. I am beginning to think that I might have to extend this project. It is been a lot of fun so far.
Tomorrow morning, my plans are to head over to Fearrington Village, near Chapel Hill, NC and paint with a local plein air painting group. There are lots of Belted Galloway cows (oreo looking cows, black front and back and white in the middle) over there, so you will probably be seeing some of them here on this blog. After painting, it's back home and start loading for the trip to paint at the Devon Horse show.
Today's painting. I had a photo of this guy and he just had to be painted. Fuzzy pig? Abominable snow hog?

The White Pig

I don't know of any pig rescue groups in the area, so a donation will be made to Danny and Ron's Rescue from the sale of this painting. The intimate 4 x 6 paintings are so versatile. Sized for the person who doesn't have any wall space. Great gifts too.
So keep with me on this journey and see what in store for tomorrow.

4. Painting the Old Roses at the Pasture

Today's paintings is of Old Roses on a Pasture Gate. Let me tell you the story of how this painting came to be.

When painting outdoors, the weather can play a significant role in my plans. Take today for example, originally I was headed out of town to paint. But weather forecasts for off and on showers all day with thunderstorms in the late afternoon made me reconsider. My second choice of location was a nearby farm where I was working on paintings of some of the barns for the owner. The barns wouldn't get sunlight until the afternoon, and two of them not until after 5:00pm. The morning was cloudy, then sunny, then a clap of thunder, then sunny. I waited for the rain. At 1:00pm it came. At 1:15 it was gone. The sun came out. A hot humid day. I watched the clouds building and building throughout the afternoon. Obviously, we would be having some major thunderstorms later.

To drive across town to paint the barns was now nixed. They were closer than my original destination, but still a 45 minute drive. So the heck with it. I had loaded my easel into the car earlier in the morning. I went and got itout of the car and looked around the yard. The wild roses and Old Roses where blooming. Honeysuckle on the fences and daisies and buttercups out in the field. I decided to set up under the shade of the Sycamore tree. In front of me was the gate to our front pasture. It isn't used that much, and the wild roses and the himalayan musk roses were climbing up around it. The sunlight was shining on the gate. As I got out my brushes it seemed that the humidity dropped, the air cleared and the breeze brought the scent of the roses. The hot summer day became a wonderful spring afternoon. I got down to painting...

3. In the Herd Cow Painting Number Two

Yes, this is another cow painting. No, it is not the same cow that was featured in yesterdays painting. Cows have been a favorite subject for painters for centuries. There is something so "pastoral" about a painting of a cow. If I am setting up to paint out in the country, I am often next to a field with a herd. Curiosity will have an entire herd ambling over to where I am painting. ( Ususally with a fence in between) After a while, when they realize I am not bringing food, most amble away, though a couple may stay to watch. I came upon this herd while driving around scouting for painting locations near home here in North Carolina.

2. OK Cow Painting

Day one got off to a great start. Blog up and emails sent all in a timely fashion. Website updated. Now only ninety eight left to go.
Today I have gone from the dogs to the cows. I photographed this one while driving through Oklahoma on our trip to California in April. The cows were standing in the field with about 2 inches of snow and the early morning sun shining on it all. We had just driven down the steepest hill we encountered during the entire trip. Sort of like a roller coaster rather than a road. Thankfully, it was a short hill. And yes, it was in Oklahoma. At the bottom of the hill, the morning sun was shining through the trees onto the dry grass poking up through the snow and creating a beautiful backlight on this herd of cows.

Here is Number One

It has started. Here is the first of the one hundred paintings that I will be completing and posting, one day at a time.

Since I will be donating a portion of the sales price of every dog painting sold to Danny and Ron's Rescue, it seemed like a good idea to start with...a dog painting.

Countdown - 1 day to go

Okay, it seems that this will be a work in progress. One on the reasons I am doing this is to streamline our updating of new work on websites, blogs and emails. Setting up galleries on our webpages, etc. I have to admit that if I wait until the database and email list and everything else is ready, I will never get around to starting. So.....

I will be uploading the first painting tomorrow.

Check back and lets see how this goes.

Danny and Ron's Rescue

As I set up this project, I have remembered how good the dogs have been to us. A lot of dog paintings and a lot of dog portraits. Well we would like to give back to the dogs. So I will be making a donation to Danny and Ron's Rescue for every painting sold in during this project.

If you know me through the Horse Shows I paint at, Danny and Ron need no introduction. If not, here is a link to their website.

Getting Ready, Counting Down

One Hundred Paintings in One Hundred days. That's my goal. A new painting to be shown everyday. Most of these will not be large paintings. Probably in the 4 x 6 inch range. These paintings will be for sale.

So what's the big deal. Just one little painting a day. Yes, but that is in addition to what is already going on in my studio. I will still be working on larger paintings, painting at the Horse Shows, setting up and exhibiting Theresa's and my work. Traveling to the shows. Not to mention, setting up all the backend to be able to show these to you.

Why? Productivity. I am always able to get more done, the busier I am. So I am going to make myself busier.

I hope you will come back and check on my progress. I am counting down to the start. When, sometime in the coming week. No, I am not stockpiling paintings. I am getting this blog ready. Adding a mailing list for those of you who want to recieve email updates and just trying to get the logistics squared away.
